Landry calls on Palaszczuk Government to move on Category C Disaster Relief
Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry has expressed disappointment in the Palaszczuk government for not providing disaster assessments that would allow for Category C grants to primary producers.
“The federal government is waiting on the assessments. Farmers on the ground are telling us that they need the Category C grants urgently so they can start rebuilding lives and industry,” Ms Landry said.
“Over the weekend I visited Clarke Creek with Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce where thousands of kilometres of fences need repair, where private roads need grading to move cattle and get feed in.
“Today I have been to cane country around Sarina where flood waters have devastated crops, roads, sheds and machinery.
“These stoic farmers are all telling me the same thing; Category C funding is what we need urgently - not grandstand statements about levees and future promises.
Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and Minister for Justice Michael Keenan have both said that they were monitoring the situation very closely with the Coalition Government ready to activate the funding as soon as sufficient information was provided by the state government.
“Main Roads and local councils are doing a great job and I commend them for getting access in to isolated areas,” Ms Landry said.
“There is a huge amount of work to do, but the quicker we can release this funding, the sooner people can start vital repairs that will minimise financial and emotional impacts.”
