Rockhampton shelter gains solar power system

The Rockhampton region today welcomed the installation of a new solar power system following a $50,000 upgrade at the Rockhampton Women’s Shelter.

Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said the Coalition Government was investing in infrastructure that will deliver long term improvements for regional Australia.

“The Rockhampton Women’s Shelter provides a safe and secure place for women and families who need to rebuild their lives away from violence,” Minister Nash said.

“I aim to build the kinds of communities where our children and grandchildren feel safe and are protected, and supporting community crisis centres does just that.”

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry, who joined the community today for the opening, said the upgrade will help with the shelter’s running costs.

“This solar system will reduce the shelter’s electricity bills, which leaves more money to provide this vital service to women in need,” Ms Landry said.

“The Coalition promised this last year and we’ve delivered. I look forward to seeing this shelter support some of the most vulnerable people in the Rockhampton community.”

The shelter can accommodate up to 11 families at one time through its eight units and three houses located in the community.

The project was fully funded by the Federal Coalition Government
