Celebrating Landcare champions in Central Queensland

Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister, Luke Hartsuyker, and Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, today visited three local properties in Central Queensland to recognise farmers for their commitment to Landcare.

Minister Hartsuyker said sugarcane farmer, Simon Mattsson, holistic farmer, Deb McLucas and grazier, Jane Bartolo, are local Landcare champions who are working hard to get better outcomes for the environment and their communities.

“These Landcare projects are innovative examples of the benefits that protecting and improving the land can have on the condition of our soil and pasture land, and our local farm production and the environment. I am pleased to see first-hand Landcare funding supporting this vital work,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“Mr Mattsson, Ms McLucas and Ms Bartolo are fulfilling the Landcare mantra of protecting our soils, water, vegetation and biodiversity, at the same time as increasing farm-gate returns for land managers—a win-win for farmers and the environment.”

“It demonstrates that after 25 years, the National Landcare Program is still making a tangible difference—here in farms in regional Queensland and around the country.

“The Australian Government has been—and continues to be—a strong supporter of Landcare, investing more than $1 billion in Landcare in the 2017 Budget.”

Ms Landry said sugarcane and cattle are both important local industries that have been pillars of the local community for generations.

“It is great to see farmers finding innovative ways to increase productivity and protect soil and pasture quality for future production.

“I pay credit to these hard working local farmers who are embracing Landcare for the betterment of their own properties, the environment, and most importantly, to share knowledge for fellow farmers in their local community.

“We have community members, farmers and other land carers across our region forming Landcare groups and committing their support to an integrated, productive and sustainable approach to land management,” Ms Landry said.
