Energy policy must not forgo our coal advantage

Federal Members for Capricornia, Dawson, and Flynn, Michelle Landry, George Christensen, and Ken O’Dowd, have today declared their undying support for the coal industry and the vital role it plays in the nation’s energy security.

The group of Central Queenslanders said they were committed to seeing national energy policy focus on affordability and reliability.

Ms Landry, whose electorate of Capricornia is home to some of the nation’s oldest and most productive coal mines, said Queensland coal was a key resource for delivering this mission.

“Bowen Basin coal mines produce some of the world’s best thermal coal.

“This coal is being shipped around the world to deliver efficient, affordable, and reliable electricity.

“There is no reason we shouldn’t be taking advantage of this natural advantage,” said Ms Landry.

“Australian families deserve to take advantage of our natural advantage; we have coal, we should use it.”

Member for Flynn, Ken O’Dowd, said Central Queenslanders understand the value of the three major coal-fired power stations located in his electorate.

“Stanwell, Callide, and Gladstone power stations not only provide employment for CQ families, they provide affordable, reliable energy to the entire East Coast Network.

“Renewables should be part of the energy mix but not at the expense of coal jobs and the coal industry that has been the back bone of Central Queensland for generations”

“Improvements in coal fired power technology, especially High Efficiency, Low Emissions (HELE) offer great opportunities for a modern energy network,” said Mr O’Dowd.

“The families, farmers and furnaces of Flynn need cheaper energy to invest in job security for this generation and the next."

Mr Christensen said it should be of the highest priority for any government to help hard-working families through ensuring the supply of this affordable and reliable energy source.

“We need a national energy policy that encourages investment in affordable, reliable energy supply for all Australians.

“Queensland coal has an undeniable advantage in delivering this and in delivering thousands of jobs for Central Queenslanders,” said Mr Christensen

“Government and politicians created our energy dilemma, government and politicians need to fix it.”
