Central Queenslanders seeking medical attention are today breathing a sigh of relief, instead of puffing for their life as uphill climb is replaced by a modern, easy-to-use, multi-story Carpark at Rockhampton Base Hospital.

The project, delivered after years of advocacy and hard work from local federal MP, Michelle Landry, is a welcome addition to the Beef Capital skyline and a godsend for ill and injured patients.

Ms Landry said it was hugely rewarding to see such an important project delivered.

“This is a project our community has been crying out for for many years and after putting in such an effort to secure funding and to get the ball rolling, it is just so good to see it finally built and open to the public.

“After a considerable effort leading up to the last federal election, we delivered $7 million federal funding and got the project off the ground,” Ms Landry said.

“And here we see today that all that hard work has paid off.”

Ms Landry said the federal government contribution was making a real difference to the costs incurred by users.

“Thanks to the Federal grant, the Queensland Government has been able to keep[ prices low, the lowest in the state, in fact, with parking charged at just $2 per hour to a maximum of $10 per day; that’s much cheaper than other facilities across the state.

Ms Landry said the impact of the project went well beyond the economic benefit to the community.

“The Rockhampton Hospital Carpark is about people; it’s about providing the infrastructure that Central Queenslanders need and deserve, so they aren’t forced to trek up hill and down dale just to get to their appointments.

“Just this morning, an elderly woman approached congratulated us for delivering the carpark as she makes regular appointments at the Base Hospital to see specialists; she was sick of trudging up the hill and is over the moon with this new carpark,” Ms Landry said.

“That feedback makes it all worthwhile.”
