Australia’s resource and energy exports will continue to underpin jobs and economic growth throughout Central Queensland, with newly released figures from the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science showing a record return of $226 billion for 2017-18.

Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Matt Canavan said strong demand and prices for coal, iron ore and liquid natural gas (LNG) was expected to push figures even higher this financial year.

“Continuing demand for high quality Australian coal in overseas markets will see it return as Australia’s top export earner, which means more dollars flowing through to the businesses and households of our coal producing regions, particularly Central Queensland,” Minister Canavan said.

The release of the June 2018 Resources and Energy Quarterly provides in-depth analysis of commodity markets and detailed forecasts for production, exports and prices.

The report predicts coal will return as Australia’s most valuable export commodity at $58.1 billion this financial year.

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry welcomed the predicted growth in coal exports.

“This is great news for Capricornia and local jobs.  The coal industry supports thousands of workers throughout the region and this report proves the point that coal in not dead – it’s booming,” Ms Landry said.

“The electorate of Capricornia is home to some of the nation’s oldest and most productive coal mines, with Queensland coal being a key resource for not just Australia, but for our export partners.

“Central Queensland mines such as those in the Bowen Basin produce some of the world’s best coal, and we should make the most of this natural advantage. We have an abundance of coal, and quite naturally we should use it for the benefit of all Australian families and industries.”
