Rookwood Weir Re-Design Raises More Questions Than Answers

September 17, 2019

Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry and Member for Flynn, Ken O’Dowd have expressed concern over information on the re-design of Rookwood Weir and the potential cost and time blowouts to the construction of the valuable project.

The re-design of Rookwood Weir indicate several significant changes to the structure and functionality of the weir, including the removal of gates from the top of the weir wall, which can raise and lower the height of the weir wall.

The exclusion of gates in the design means that the total volume of water that the weir can hold has dropped from 76,000 megalitres down to 54,000 megalitres.

“This drastic change in design means less water for crops, less water for livestock and less water for farmers to make a living”, Ms Landry said.

“Water is crucial for regional communities and time and time again, the Palaszczuk Labor Government has shown they don’t care about regional Queensland and their access to water.”

Member for Flynn, Ken O’Dowd said water is the lifeblood of regional areas, especially when drought is rife in regional Queensland.

“We owe it to our primary producers and our rural communities to deliver long-term sustainable water infrastructure,” Mr O’Dowd said.

“Whether it is the black-throated finch, project cost blowouts or even the cost of concrete, the Palaszczuk Labor Government always seems to find an excuse for not building in Central Queensland.

“Anthony Lynham said that the Queensland State Labor Government would meet the deadline to build Rookwood Weir, but we've heard this all before.

“Come on, Annastacia. Get your boots on, get the shovels out and let's get started on Rookwood,” Mr O’Dowd said.

New estimates indicate construction tenders will be finalised by June 2020 with Rookwood Weir expected to be completed by 2023.
