Rally to Fight for the Real Rookwood Weir

September 27, 2019

Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry has announced plans to host a rally in Rockhampton to protest the Queensland Labor Government’s handling of the construction of Rookwood Weir.

The calls for the rally come after the total water capacity of Rookwood Weir have dropped from 76,000 megalitres down to 54,000 megalitres under re-designs and the amount of water reserved for agricultural means has been halved from 40,000 megalitres down to 20,000 megalitres.

Michelle Landry said while the Queensland Government has a great deal to answer for after mishandling the planning of Rookwood Weir and spending $250 million on public service handouts.

“While Jackie Trad and Annastacia Palaszczuk have splashed out big cash bonuses for George Street bureaucrats, farmers in Central Queensland are begging for water,” Ms Landry said.

“We’ve had a gutful of how Labor have handled Rookwood Weir for far too long – now they are drawing up plans to downsize Rookwood into a mini-weir.

“We are calling on the Queensland Government to get serious about water, to start giving a damn about our farmers and to build the real Rookwood Weir.”

Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Matt Canavan said the Queensland Government cannot manage money and isn’t focused on Central Queensland.

“Rookwood Weir is a once in a generation opportunity to ensure water security for Central Queensland and to turn the region into a food bowl.

“Unfortunately, the Trad-Palaszczuk Government is putting this all at risk. It can find millions of dollars to splash on bonuses for Brisbane based public servants, but isn’t focused on what Central Queensland badly needs.

“If you care about our farmers, about Rookwood Weir and about CQ’s water security, come to the rally and tell the Trad-Palaszczuk Government that enough is enough.”

Details of the rally are as follows:

  • What: Fight for the Real Rookwood Weir

  • When: Thursday, 3rd October 2019 at 9:00am

  • Where: Rockhampton Riverbank, next to The Boathouse, 189 Quay Street Rockhampton QLD 4700.
